Statewide Traffic Enforcement Targets Dangerous Driving Behaviors

The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police announced a statewide traffic enforcement blitz Friday, January 16, heading into one of winter’s busiest travel weekends. The “Goal Zero” initiative aims to reduce traffic fatalities at the start of the heavily traveled Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend. 

Law enforcement presence statewide will increase Friday afternoon during the high-risk period from 3 to 7 p.m. Enforcement will focus on dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and intersection violations. 

“Goal Zero” is part of broader efforts under the state’s Target Zero program to eliminate traffic fatalities entirely through a combination of enforcement, education, engineering, and community engagement. Traffic fatalities declined significantly in 2025, with 107 fewer deaths on New Jersey roads, a 16% reduction over the previous year. 

The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety urges drivers to “plan ahead, slow down, buckle up, drive sober, and stay alert,” especially during peak travel times this weekend.
