Authorities are investigating a fatal head-on collision on Amwell Road in Somerset County on Tuesday. Franklin Township Police said the sole occupant of one vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver and one passenger in the other vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials have not released the identities of the victims or what led to the crash.
Local firefighters, EMS personnel, and police were among the emergency responders. The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team and the Franklin Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau are investigating the cause of the crash.
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of car accidents and account for approximately 10 percent of all fatalities. They are most common on rural roads due to narrow lanes, sharp curves, and the lack of barriers separating opposing traffic. Rural roads, such as the stretch of Amwell Road near South Middlebush Road where the accident occurred, are a factor in over 13 percent of all fatal head-on collisions.
The severe impact of head-on collisions typically results in life-threatening injuries, including spinal cord damage, traumatic brain injuries, internal organ damage, and broken bones. Head-on collisions generally occur due to driver distraction, impaired or drunk driving, speeding, drowsy driving, and lane drifting, frequently occurring during the night or in low-visibility conditions.
