An elderly Whiting woman remains hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a car while walking her dog in Fox Hollow on Friday.

Police say the woman was crossing the intersection of Tuckerton and Pershing Avenues when she was hit by a Toyota Corolla and thrown 20 feet upon impact. She suffered severe full-body injuries and was flown to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The driver remained at the accident scene and was uninjured. Authorities said sun glare appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash, limiting the driver’s visibility.

Two Whiting Fire Company volunteer firefighters were nearby and reported to the scene within seconds, along with other good Samaritans, the fire company said.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and the New Jersey State Police South Star air medical helicopter also responded.

Sun glare can be a significant hazard for drivers, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sun is low on the horizon, causing blinding conditions. Sun glare can dramatically reduce visibility, making it difficult to see other vehicles, pedestrians, and traffic signals or react quickly to sudden obstacles, increasing the risk of accidents. To combat sun glare, keep your windshield clean, use sun visors, wear polarized sunglasses, and adjust travel times to avoid driving during peak glare periods.
