Two men were killed in a crash on Route 1 in Linden on Saturday, one day after another fatal crash on the same stretch of road. According to the Linden Police Department, the men were traveling northbound in an Infiniti sedan when they crashed into a tractor-trailer turning left onto South Stiles Street.
One passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a second passenger were transported to Newark University Hospital, where the passenger later died of his injuries. The truck driver was not injured in the crash.
Just one day before, a Brooklyn motorcyclist was killed after crashing into a pickup truck driving southbound through the turnaround near the Phillips 66 terminal entrance. Both crashes remain under investigation.
Due to its proximity to the Goethals Bridge, Route 1 is frequently traveled by Staten Island residents and has experienced an alarming number of vehicle accidents in recent years, including a four-car pileup earlier this year.
Most accidents involving passenger cars and tractor-trailers occur at intersections or while tractor-trailers make left turns, usually due to the driver’s failure to yield or misjudge the truck’s distance. These types of crashes usually result in underrides, in which the smaller vehicle slides underneath the side of the trailer during impact, causing catastrophic injuries or fatalities.
