Sanitation Worker Killed in Fatal Truck Crash
A sanitation worker was killed in a crash on County Road north of the intersection of Prospect Terrace on Monday morning. The Tenafly Police Department said an ABC Towing tractor-trailer was traveling northbound when it crashed into the rear of a stopped Regional Industries LLC garbage truck as a worker was transferring garbage from area residences.
The worker, 23, suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers and another sanitation employee suffered minor injuries and were transported to Englewood Health Medical Center for precautionary evaluation.
Officers and emergency personnel from the Cresskill Police Department, Tenafly Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Englewood Health Medical Center Paramedics, Tenafly Volunteer Fire Department, Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, and representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) responded to the scene.
County Road remained closed for several hours following the collision, and no citations were issued. The cause of the crash remains under police investigation. An OSHA spokesperson announced that OSHA has also opened an investigation, due to the fatality. The agency has six months to conduct the investigation and release its findings.
Garbage trucks are considered high-risk vehicles due to their frequent stops and large blind spots, which can lead to collisions. Sanitation workers often work in close proximity to moving traffic, making them particularly vulnerable to being struck by larger vehicles when loading garbage.
