Twenty-Seven Injured in New Jersey Transit Bus Crash

Twenty-seven people were injured following a head-on collision involving a New Jersey Transit bus and a passenger car in Union Township Friday. Police report that the crash occurred on Stuyvesant Avenue near Pleasant Parkway after a northbound BMW crossed into the southbound lane, colliding with the 94-line bus operating between Bloomfield and Linden.

The BMW driver and numerous passengers on the bus were injured in the collision. The crash forced a second bus directly behind the first to stop suddenly, injuring another four passengers, though it was not involved in the collision.

Emergency responders from the Union Fire Department and Union County Mutual Aid responded to the scene to render medical aid. All of the injured were transported to hospitals in various areas. Police said passengers suffered from broken bones, facial injuries, neck pain, and general trauma. Roads were closed to allow multiple ambulances access to treat and transport passengers to the hospitals. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Due to size and weight, collisions involving public transit buses and passenger cars generally result in extensive damage and severe or fatal injuries. Multiple injuries in a single crash increase with higher numbers of bus passengers. Collisions between buses and passenger vehicles typically occur due to bus size, maneuverability, extended driver hours, and other motorists’ actions. Head-on collisions between buses and passenger cars are especially dangerous.
