New Jersey ranks third in the nation for fatal car crashes involving aggressive or careless driving. According to a new LendingTree analysis, 45.1% of fatal crashes in 2024 involved at least one unsafe behavior, including aggressive, careless, or improper driving, inattentive operation, or driving without due care. Arkansas and Louisiana hold the top two rankings, at 47.2% and 46.2%, respectively.
Nationally, men were involved in 78.6% of fatal aggressive or careless driving crashes, while women accounted for 20%. Millennials represented the largest share of involved drivers at 31.5%, with Generation Z close behind at 27.7%. Together, both generations accounted for nearly 60% of these types of fatal crashes.
A LendingTree car insurance expert said driver behavior plays a larger role than demographics, as Millennials and Gen Z drivers commute, drive for work, or travel more during rush hour or late-night hours than older generations, increasing their risks. She emphasized that drivers who speed or disregard traffic laws more frequently are more likely to be involved in a fatal collision, regardless of age or gender.
Researchers also found that Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 were most frequently involved in fatal crashes linked to aggressive or careless driving, likely reflecting their popularity and evidencing that larger, heavier pickup trucks can contribute to more severe crashes.
To reduce risks, drivers are urged to avoid distractions, obey speed limits, maintain a safe following distance, and not escalate confrontations with other drivers. Take regular rest breaks during long trips and use driver-assistance technology while keeping attention on the road.
