An 85-year-old South Plainfield was killed while exiting the Krauszer’s Convenience Store parking lot on Oak Tree Avenue in South Plainfield. According to the South Plainfield Police Department, the man attempted to turn left onto Oak Tree Avenue when a Mercedes Benz van struck his Chevrolet Malibu on the driver’s side.
Police said the impact caused the man’s vehicle to subsequently crash into a utility pole before coming to a rest. The driver was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The van driver remained at the scene, and no charges were issued.
The accident is under investigation.
Left-turn car accidents are common, typically occurring at intersections, parking lot entrances and exits, and driveways. Lefthand turns are more than three times more likely to result in accidents. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, approximately 53 percent of side-impact, or “T-bone,” collisions involve a left-turning vehicle and usually result in severe injuries and fatalities due to the angle and speed of impact.
