One man was killed and one seriously injured in a chain-reaction crash Saturday, September 12, on the Garden State Parkway in Cranford. According to New Jersey State Police, the collision occurred close to midnight when a Mercedes-Benz sedan rear-ended a Kia near milepost 139.
Police say the Kia spun and collided with an Acura SUV. The Mercedes continued forward, struck a Toyota passenger vehicle, shoved it off the road, and caused it to overturn.
After hitting the Toyota, the Mercedes then ran off the highway and crashed into two trees, killing the front-seat passenger upon impact, police said. The driver was seriously injured and transported to an area hospital.
In an effort to avoid the wreck, police say another Mercedes-Benz changing lanes also hit the Acura SUV, causing a secondary crash.
All other drivers were treated for minor injuries at an area hospital and released.
The crash remains under investigation.
