Eleven Injured in Hunterdon County School Bus Crash

Ten children and one adult suffered minor injuries in a school bus crash Sunday on Route 31 in Hunterdon County. The New Jersey State Police said the driver lost control of the bus, veered off the highway, struck a mailbox, and landed in a ditch.

The group was traveling for a school camp program when the bus crashed just after 3:00 p.m. near milepost 37.5 in Glen Gardner. The bus driver was not charged, and an investigation into the crash is ongoing.

School bus accidents are relatively rare. The New Jersey Department of Transportation reports that 1,500 to 2,000 are reported yearly, typically due to driver error, mechanical failure, inclement weather, and distracted driving. The majority of school bus accidents result in only minor injuries or none at all.

New Jersey laws require you to stop in either lane when the bus lights are flashing and the driver has extended the stop sign. You must remain stopped until all the children have crossed the road and the driver turns off the flashing lights. Increase your distance when following a school bus, and leave plenty of room when passing a bus or pulling in front of one on a highway.
