Nearly 50 people were injured in separate crashes about an hour apart in nearly the same spot on the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County on Sunday, authorities said.

A chain-reaction crash occurred on the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County involving two Van Hool commuter buses and three passenger vehicles. According to New Jersey State Police, one bus rear-ended the other, leading to a chain-reaction collision with three vehicles behind them. A total of 39 people sustained minor injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals.

Officials said the buses were traveling together from Arlington, Virginia to New York City. The collision caused significant delays that backed up northbound traffic for miles, almost to the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange in Mansfield Township. The back-up caused a second chain-reaction crash that injured another nine people.
