The case involved a 2012 fire in a 2-family house in Plainfield, NJ. We represented a mother and her 3 children, ages 4,6, and 8, who were 2nd floor tenants. A fire started within the refrigerator while the client was bathing her children. She was overcome by flames as she managed to get her 3 children out of the apartment. She spent 51 days at St. Barnabas Hospital in the burn unit. We filed suit against the manufacturer of the kitchen appliance claiming product defects and also against the landlord claiming inadequate smoke alarms. In addition to claims for the mother’s physical injuries, we asserted psychological claims on behalf of each child. The matter was filed in Superior Court of NJ, Union County. All claims resolved following jury selection this week.
