A 6-year-old boy riding his bicycle was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday in a downtown Jersey City residential neighborhood. Jersey City Police Department officials said the child was struck just before 4 p.m. near Jersey Avenue and Sixth Street. He suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The boy was later identified as a resident who lived in the neighborhood.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators, police said. No charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
Residents told local media that the densely packed, quiet neighborhood near historic Hamilton Park is a popular area for local children to play and are often riding bikes on neighborhood roads.
Government officials and area residents took to social media to express both condolences to the family and frustrations over driving behaviors, many requesting better enforcement of speed limits and road rules.
One local resident wrote, “Despite all the progress to make our streets safer, drivers are a real threat, and the inability to enforce the rules of the road makes Jersey City’s roads even more dangerous. I am heartbroken. Pray for this boy and his family.”
