New Jersey Turnpike Truck Crash Kills One, Injures Toddler
A Nutley man was killed and a toddler injured in a crash with a tractor-trailer Sunday on the New Jersey Turnpike. According to the New Jersey State Police, the 34 man was driving a Toyota Camry in the northbound express lane around 9:00 p.m. when he crashed into the rear of a disabled Kenworth tractor-trailer stopped in the right lane near Fort Lee.
The child, 20 months, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover. No one else was injured in the crash. Police declined to confirm whether the driver and child were related and released no additional details. The crash remains under investigation.
Rear-end collisions are among the most common types of car accidents. They are typically caused by driver inattention, following too closely, sudden braking, or stopped traffic. Distracted driving, such as texting or eating, is the leading cause of rear-end collisions, followed by speeding, weather conditions, and reckless driving.
Rear-end collisions with tractor-trailers are especially devastating and almost always result in the deaths of the passenger car occupants. Survivors typically suffer debilitating traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, and life-threatening internal organ injuries.
