A New Jersey man was killed Tuesday in a four-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in Bayonne. According to the New Jersey State Police, a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on the Hudson Bay Extension struck the rear of an SUV near milepost 2.8, igniting a chain reaction involving two more vehicles.
The impact shoved the SUV into a Jeep, which was forced into a pickup truck. Upon impact with the Jeep, the SUV veered to the right into a concrete barrier, killing the driver. The only other occupant, a front-seat passenger, suffered moderate injuries, officials said. None of the others involved in the four-vehicle incident suffered injuries, police said.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Rear-end collisions involving tractor-trailers can have devastating consequences due to the size, weight, and momentum of commercial vehicles. When a truck strikes a smaller vehicle, the force of impact can push it into surrounding traffic or fixed objects, creating a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles.
Even when only one vehicle sustains catastrophic damage, crashes involving tractor-trailers often leave investigators sorting through a complex sequence of events to determine exactly how the collision unfolded.
