The FMCSRs Mandate “Extreme Caution” for Truck Drivers Operating in Hazardous Weather Conditions

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) set forth requirements for truck drivers operating in hazardous weather conditions. According to 49 C.F.R. §392.14, the regulations mandate “extreme caution” when conditions exist that affect visibility or traction such as snow, ice, sleet, fog, mist, rain, dust or smoke. If conditions are sufficiently dangerous, the driver must stop the truck completely. Many catastrophic truck accidents could be avoided by simply observing this Regulation.
