Two men were fatally struck by a vehicle while attempting to change a flat tire on the shoulder of Interstate 78 near Warren Township Wednesday. The New Jersey State Patrol said the two men were stopped on the right shoulder to change a flat tire on their Toyota minivan. The men were outside and near the vehicle’s right rear, between the van and a guardrail.
An oncoming Mercedes veered onto the shoulder, striking the minivan’s rear and colliding into the guardrail, hitting the men. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
Interstate and highway shoulders present significant risks to motorists outside their vehicles. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, over 200 pedestrians are killed by motor vehicles each year in New Jersey, an increasing number occurring on major highways and interstates. Pedestrians changing tires are particularly vulnerable due to limited visibility and high speeds of passing vehicles.
New Jersey drivers are required to slow down and move into another lane when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks, maintenance crews, and vehicles stopped for roadside issues. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and avoid stopping on the shoulder unless in an emergency. Drivers who must stop should pull off completely clear of traffic lanes and use emergency lights, signals, or road flares to alert oncoming drivers.
