Diocese of Camden

The Diocese of Camden faced significant legal challenges related to allegations of childhood sexual abuse within its clergy. On October 1, 2020, the Diocese of Camden filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. This filing came after the diocese was confronted with over a hundred lawsuits filed against it following the passage of the 2019 Child Victims Act.

The lawsuits ultimately involved over 300 victims of sexual abuse who came forward seeking justice and accountability. In April 2022, a historic settlement of $87.5 million was reached between the diocese and the victims, marking a significant step towards resolution.

However, the litigation did not end with the settlement. The victims’ claims are covered by several insurance policies issued to the diocese over the years of abuse, leading to complex legal issues. These issues were litigated before U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Jerrold Poslusny for nearly two years.

On March 15, 2024, Judge Poslusny issued a decision confirming the bankruptcy plan and settlement reached between the victims and the diocese. Despite this confirmation, the legal process continues as the insurance companies have filed an appeal of this decision, indicating that the resolution of the Diocese of Camden’s bankruptcy and litigation is still ongoing.
