On Tuesday, an out-of-control garbage truck crashed into a house and three parked vehicles on Eagle Avenue in New Milford. According to police and surveillance footage, the driver exited the truck to help the crew collect trash bins. After he exited, the truck began moving on its own, with no one in the cab.
According to the driver, he attempted to get back into the truck but claimed the door was locked. He later told police that he put the vehicle in park before getting out to assist with garbage pickup.
The truck proceeded to crash into one car, jump the sidewalk and slam into two additional vehicles parked in a driveway before coming to a stop against a house, inches from a gas meter. No one was injured in any of the collisions, and first responders evacuated all occupants in the home.
Utility crews checked and cleared the gas main with no reports of damage. No damage was reported to the structure of the house, and residents were allowed to return. Only one of the family’s three vehicles remained drivable and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help with expenses.
Police cited the truck driver with delaying traffic, leaving the vehicle with the engine running, reckless driving, and careless driving. Investigators were unable to determine whether the truck slipped into gear on its own or was the result of operator error.
