Route 28 was closed in both directions Monday following a crash involving an overturned vehicle near a creek in Branchburg. Branchburg Police were called to the scene on Route 28 near the North Branch Fire Department, where a blue Hyundai Tucson had crashed and was resting on its roof near the creek.
Officers said the driver had exited the vehicle before arrival and appeared alert, conscious, and responsive. He was transported to Somerset Robert Wood Johnson Hospital (RWJ) in New Brunswick.
Volunteers from the North Branch and Country Hills fire departments and emergency responders from Branchburg EMS and Somerset RWJ Hospital also responded to the scene. Somerset County HazMat teams responded to assess whether contaminants from the overturned vehicle leaked into the creek.
Route 28 was temporarily closed between Raritan Valley College Drive and Burnt Mill Road while crews cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
Rollover crashes are somewhat rare but dangerous and typically result in severe injuries or fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), only three percent of all vehicle accidents involve rollovers, but they result in nearly 35 percent of all car accident fatalities.
Over 85 percent of rollovers are single-vehicle accidents, often caused by speeding, sharp turns, drunk driving, distracted driving, poor road conditions, and loss of control. Rollover accidents are also more common in SUVs and pickup trucks due to their center of gravity and higher profiles.
