A Somerset man was killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving a dump truck Friday near the intersection of Route 1 South and College Road in Plainsboro. According to police, an Acura TSX crashed into the rear of a dump truck, causing the truck to veer into the left lane, where it was struck by a Hyundai Genesis.
The Acura driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was transported to Capital Health Medical Center in Trenton in critical condition. Both drivers of the Hyundai Genesis and the dump truck sustained only minor injuries, officials said.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash or video footage is asked to call Officer Dan Titan of the Plainsboro Police Department at 609-799-2333 or Detective James Barnes of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3437.
Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of car accidents in New Jersey, and tailgating is the leading cause. Following another vehicle too closely drastically reduces the time and distance needed to react to sudden changes in traffic, such as slowing down, unexpected stops, or avoiding a hazard.
At highway speeds, the force of a rear-end crash can be especially severe when a passenger car collides with a much larger vehicle, such as a dump truck. Between the impact and size disparity, rear-end collisions can lead to life-altering injuries, including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord trauma, or death.
Follow the speed limit, maintain a safe following distance, and stay alert for changing traffic patterns, especially on interstates and during periods of heavy traffic congestion.
