Two people are dead and another injured following a Labor Day crash in Burlington County. According to the New Jersey State Police, the crash occurred on US Highway 206 at the intersection of Quaker Bridge Road.
Police said a southbound Ford 350 pickup truck collided with a westbound Toyota passenger car west on Quaker Bridge Road. On impact, the Toyota overturned, landing in Atsion Lake. Both occupants suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
All southbound lanes of Route 206 north of Atsion Lake were shut down for hours following the accident, which remains under investigation, police said.
Collisions between pickup trucks and passenger vehicles often have devastating consequences due to the size and weight difference between the vehicles. Smaller cars typically absorb the brunt of the impact, leaving occupants far more vulnerable to serious or fatal injuries.
Accidents involving vehicles that have overturned into water create added dangers and complicate emergency response efforts. Rescue crews must work quickly to access submerged vehicles, and even short delays can drastically reduce the chances of survival for those trapped inside.
