On Tuesday, eight people were hospitalized after a tractor-trailer crashed into a New Jersey Transit bus in Essex County. According to the Port Authority Police, the bus was en route to the Jersey Gardens Mall when it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Marlin and Port Streets in Newark.

The bus driver and seven passengers were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver refused medical attention, police said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Rear-end collisions involving buses and tractor-trailers can place dozens of passengers at risk in a single impact. Buses often lack seat belts for every occupant, and the force of a crash from a large commercial truck can cause passengers to be thrown from their seats or into interior structures. These crashes frequently lead to multiple injuries and require significant emergency response, even when injuries are later classified as non-life-threatening.
