On January 18, 2024, around 2 p.m., a dump truck lost control and crashed into a Target store on Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen, New Jersey, injuring six people. The truck, loaded with dirt from a construction site, rolled down a steep side street, crossed the busy Tonnelle Avenue (U.S. Routes 1 & 9), and struck a tractor-trailer before plowing through the store’s wall.
According to the township spokeswoman, the truck driver reported brake failure as the cause of the crash. The tractor-trailer, which was not carrying cargo, sustained damage but remained on the road. The dump truck came to a stop entirely inside the store, causing extensive structural damage.
North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue responded with a Rescue Task Force, including UASI Rescue 2 and a shoring unit, to stabilize the scene.
