Construction Worker Killed by Attenuator Truck on Atlantic City Expressway 

A construction worker was fatally struck by a crash attenuator truck Friday on the Atlantic City Expressway in Winslow Township, according to the New Jersey State Police. Authorities said the truck’s driver was backing up to retrieve cones from a closed shoulder when he unintentionally ran over the worker. The driver was reportedly unaware the worker was behind the vehicle. The victim, a 31-year-old man from Egg Harbor, died from his injuries.

Police initially reported no other injuries in connection with the incident but later clarified they were investigating a separate minor crash that occurred in the same area around the same time.

Crash attenuator trucks are designed to absorb impact and protect both motorists and construction crews in active work zones. However, their safe operation requires clear communication and strict adherence to safety protocols. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates backing procedures and traffic control measures to reduce risks to road workers.

New Jersey law further reinforces these protections under the Work Zone Safety Act, which requires detailed traffic control plans, proper signage, and coordinated operations to minimize the danger in highway work zones. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
