New Jersey’s judge shortage has resulted in a backlog of nearly 4,000 divorce proceedings and another 4,700 other family law cases. This backlog has caused delays of years or even decades in contested splits, depriving families of the resolution they need to move forward.
Injured elderly individuals have also been affected by the lack of trial dates available for medical negligence cases. Bloomberg Law asked RAM Law partner Ed Rebenack his opinion on the matter who described the situation as an “absolute mess.” Rebenack is seeing clients suing over injuries unable to pay bills, and falling prey to pre-settlement loan providers that charge as high as 30%-40% interest for their loans. Months or years will go by without a trial date, and interest swallows whatever recovery these plaintiffs might have gotten for their injuries.
